Szczawnica and the surrounding mountains

The Pieniny begin at the doorstep

Trails, mineral waters, the Dunajec Gorge and places worth returning to — many without a long drive.

Panorama of Szczawnica and the Pieniny seen from the property

From the house to the trail

  1. Trzy Korony and Sokolica. The classic Pieniny route begins near the river crossing on the Pieniny Road. Return the same way or descend towards Krościenko.

  2. Bryjarka and the Bereśnik mountain hut. A gentler climb leads through the spa and mineral-water quarter; beyond it, the trail opens towards the Beskid Sądecki.

  3. Zaskalnik waterfall. A pleasant family walk to a small waterfall. The blue trail continues from here towards Przehyba.

  4. Pitoniakówka spring. A short, quiet walk along the Skotnicki stream to a mineral-water spring that sees fewer visitors.

Gorges, limestone and open valleys

Homole Gorge is one of the region’s signatures: rocky, intensely green and full of the sound of water. Jaworki is reached by car or local minibus.

Biała Woda nature reserve is a gentler alternative, with limestone formations, cascades and a broad valley suited to an unhurried day.

Along the Dunajec into Slovakia

The Pieniny Road follows the Dunajec Gorge on foot or by bicycle to Červený Kláštor. It passes the Hundred-Year Spring, memorable views of Sokolica and the Slovak border. Bicycles can be hired in Szczawnica.

A day in the spa town

The Lower and Upper Parks, Art Nouveau inhalatorium, pump room, St Adalbert’s Church and Dietl Square form a walk through Szczawnica’s history. Leave time for the mineral waters and a slow return beside the Grajcarek.

A little further afield

  • the medieval timber church at Dębno,

  • former Lemko churches in Szlachtowa and Jaworki,

  • the Pieniny Museum and traces of local highland culture.
